In the heart of Yerevan, the monument “Mother Armenia” rises above the city. The monument, 54 meters high and made of copper, is intended to immortalize the feat of the Armenian people in the Great Patriotic War.

Traditionally, the image of the Motherland is a woman. In this monument, a mother puts a sword in its scabbard.

Strength, power and victory are symbolized by the monument “Mother Armenia”.

What is the “Mother Armenia” Monument

“Mother Armenia” is a sculpture of 22 m, and together with the pedestal it is 54 m. At the base of “Mother Armenia” is the Museum of the Ministry of Defense. Here you can see personal belongings, documents, weapons and portraits of heroes not only of the Great Patriotic War, but also of Karabakh.

The Museum of the Ministry of Defense has exhibits that also tell about the life of rear workers. Tourists can learn how workers, peasants and intellectuals worked, loved and simply lived during the war years.

Not always in this place rose a woman, representing the collective image of the mother of the land of Armenia. Originally, the pedestal was occupied by the sculptor Joseph Stalin.

The monument “Mother Armenia” is surrounded by samples of arms, and at its foot the Eternal Flame burns, designed to perpetuate the memory of the fallen heroes.

Not always on this place rose a woman who is a collective image of the mother of the land of Armenia. Initially on a pedestal, which appeared in the center of Yerevan in 1950, was installed sculptor Joseph Stalin, whose author was Sergei Merkulov. But after the personality cult of the ruler of the country was destroyed, the same fate befell the monuments personifying Stalin.

A new sculptor appeared on the pedestal in 1968. The authors of the monument “Mother Armenia” were architect Rafael Israelyan and sculptor Ara Harutyunyan.

How to get to the “Mother Armenia” monument in Yerevan

The monument “Mother Armenia” is located in the center of Yerevan, in Akhtanak (Victory) Park.

The safest and most reliable way to get to Yerevan for Russian tourists is by plane. You can use Aeroflot, Armavia or Siberia airlines. Land transport after the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict is practically inaccessible for Russians. Nor is it worth trying to get to Armenia by private car, as you may encounter problems at the border with Georgia.

From Zvartnots airport, which is a few kilometers from Yerevan, you can get to the city center by bus or cab.

Practical information about the “Mother Armenia” monument

The museum complex “Mother Armenia” is open daily for tourists. You can admire the monument itself at any time, and to get into the museum on weekdays from 10:00 to 17:00, on weekends – from 10:00 to 15:00.
